The nature of the Ph.D. as developed by the California Pacific School of Theology is as follows:

It is a theological degree. The student is expected to specialize in the mastery of theological knowledge and history.

It is a research degree. The student is expected to master content, to conceptualize at an original and scholarly level and to make a contribution to knowledge that will advance the theory and practice of the Christian faith.

It is a professional degree. The student is expected to advance in the skills and practices of the Christian Church, especially in his professional focus for the formulation of new procedures and methods.
